Equipment finance providers in the UK: how to compare your options

An impartial guide to comparing banks, specialist asset finance lenders, brokers and supplier finance programmes by fit, cost and agreement terms.

Choosing a provider Published Updated 9 min read

The short answer: there is no single best equipment finance provider for every business. The right option depends on the asset, amount, trading profile, preferred agreement and how quickly the purchase needs to complete. Compare the whole agreement, not just the monthly payment.

UK businesses can arrange equipment finance directly with a bank or specialist lender, through an independent broker, or through a supplier's finance programme. Each route can work well. The important question is whether the provider understands the asset and can offer suitable terms for the business buying it.

This guide explains the main routes, gives non-exhaustive examples of established providers and sets out a practical comparison checklist. It is not a ranking or a recommendation of any lender.

Four routes to equipment finance

High-street banks

Some banks provide asset finance alongside their wider business banking services. This can suit established customers who value one banking relationship, although product and asset appetite varies.

Specialist asset finance lenders

Specialists focus on assets and may have deeper experience in particular sectors, equipment types or transaction sizes. They can offer hire purchase, leasing and other structured agreements.

Independent finance brokers

A broker is not the lender. It assesses the proposal, approaches suitable funders and helps manage the application. This can be useful when lender appetite or agreement structure is not obvious.

Supplier and manufacturer finance

Equipment suppliers may offer finance at the point of sale through an in-house team, a broker or a panel of lenders. It can make the purchase easier, but the same whole-cost checks still matter.

What to compare before choosing

Comparison point What to check
Asset fitDoes the provider regularly fund this asset type, age, supplier and sector?
Total amount payableWhat will the business pay across the full agreement, including fees and any final payment?
Deposit or advance rentalHow much is required at the start, when is VAT due and how does that affect cash flow?
Term and payment profileAre payments fixed, how often are they collected and does the term match the asset's useful life?
Ownership and end of termWill the business own the asset, continue renting it, return it or pay a final fee?
Early settlementCan the agreement be settled early and how would the settlement figure be calculated?
Speed and serviceWho manages the application, what information is needed and how are delays communicated?

Why the lender's asset appetite matters

Lenders do not all assess equipment in the same way. Hard assets such as construction machinery and commercial vehicles may have a visible resale market. Used, specialist or softer assets can require a lender with relevant experience.

Sector knowledge also matters. A provider familiar with commercial coffee machines, catering equipment, manufacturing machinery or garage equipment is more likely to understand the supplier, installation costs and useful life. A lower monthly payment can cost more

Monthly cost is useful for budgeting, but it is only one part of the decision. A lower payment may reflect a longer term, a larger final payment or different end-of-term conditions. Ask for the total payable and make sure comparable quotes use the same deposit, term, payment frequency and VAT treatment.

The structure matters too. Hire purchase and equipment leasing can produce different ownership, accounting and tax outcomes. Your accountant should advise on the treatment for your business.

Capra view: compare the agreement, not just the payment. The strongest quote is the one that fits the asset, cash flow and intended use without hiding an expensive or unsuitable end position.

Questions to ask every provider or broker

What an equipment finance broker does

A broker helps package the proposal and introduces it to a lender whose appetite appears to fit the business and equipment. The lender still makes the credit decision and provides the finance. A broker should explain its role, the proposed agreement and how it is paid.

Capra Finance is an independent broker. We look at the asset, supplier, business profile and timing before approaching a suitable funder. We may receive commission and/or other benefits from the finance provider if a customer enters into an agreement with them.

Frequently asked questions

Who provides equipment finance in the UK?

Equipment finance is available from high-street banks, specialist asset finance lenders, manufacturers and suppliers, and through independent finance brokers. The right route depends on the asset, amount, business profile and preferred agreement.

How should I compare equipment finance providers?

Compare providers on asset and sector experience, total amount payable, deposit or advance rental, agreement term, end-of-term position, early settlement terms, service and likely approval fit.

Is an equipment finance broker the same as a lender?

No. A lender provides the finance and makes the credit decision. A broker introduces the application to suitable lenders and helps structure and manage the proposal.

Should I choose the lowest monthly payment?

Not automatically. A lower monthly payment may come from a longer term, larger final payment or different end-of-term conditions. Compare the total payable and the whole agreement, not only the headline payment.
